Annotations for Jamie muscato carrie hope fletcher christopher chung dominic andersen and original west end cast of heathers our love is god

Lyric: You’re not alone
Annotation:
Veronica starts to repeat the ends of J.D.’s lines, showing that he is manipulating her into agreeing with him

Lyric: Ugh
Annotation:
Here in the west end version Jamie Muschato’s J.D. shows disgust that Veronica doesnt know what an ich luge/ I lie bullet is while in the Off-Broadway production he had no emotion to her asking at all.

Lyric: I was a frozen lake
Annotation:
In Dante’s Inferno, the Ninth Circle of Hell is a frozen lake. In contrast with typical images of Hell as hot and fiery, the center of Hell being a frozen lake depicts a different type of evil – just as JD’s chilling psychopathy contrasts with the bullying style of Kurt, Ram, and the Heathers. Additionally, the Ninth Circle is reserved for sinners guilty of treachery – presumably including JD’s betrayal of Veronica’s trust with the Ich Luge bullets later in the song.

Lyric: I’d trade my life for yours
Annotation:
Some interesting foreshadowing, considering J.D. literally trades his life for Veronica’s at the end of both the musical and the film.

Lyric: We’ll burn it down and then
 We’ll build the world again...
Annotation:
This is foreshadowing to him almost ‘burning down’ the high school but he did it for her, so they could make the world again without the people that made her cry

Lyric: We’re what killed the dinosaurs
Annotation:
A reference to the movie line, “chaos is what killed the dinosaurs, my darling.” However, here it comes before Kurt and Ram’s murder, and in the movie, it comes after

Lyric: Our love is God
 Our love is God
 Our love is God
 Our love is God
 Our love is God
Annotation:
When J.D said “Our love is God” before, it sounded sweeter and more loving, right? After J.D has killed Kurt and Ram, and it becomes more evident how he worships Veronica’s love over all, it takes on a more menacing and commanding tone, as if he was pressing her to say it in return.

Lyric: What the fuck have you done?!
Annotation:
This is the first time (at least that I have knowledge of) that the word “fuck” is said at all in the musical. This is the case because Veronica has finally realized the severity of J.D’s actions, and that he is a psychopath.

Lyric: So let’s go hunt some jocks!
Annotation:
The way Veronica presents this line is with the same amount of passion and enthusiasm as J.D’s, since he has fooled her into thinking they will just be knocked out and not that J.D was planning to kill them and she was just as willing to do this as he was, but only because she didn’t know what was truly going to happen.

Lyric: “Ram and I died because we had to hide our gay forbidden love from a misapproving world.”
Annotation:
Instead of using the correct word, which is “disapproving”, the word “misapproving” was used. This was clever. J.D knew that Kurt and/or Ram were not smart enough to know the correct form of the word, thus included it in the forgery to make it seem more realistic.

Lyric: Yeah-lo?
Annotation:
Saying “Yeah-lo” Sounds like a very empty-headed thing to say, which matches the description of a typical Jock perfectly.

Lyric: Plant our garden here
Annotation:
This is a very Grandma-Grandpa thing to do. Planting a garden means settling down usually with a loved one which does not fit the theme of this song at all.

Lyric: [KURT, spoken]
 Ah! Holy crap!

 [J.D., spoken]
Stay there! I’ll get him back

 [VERONICA, spoken]
 Ram?

 [KURT, spoken]
 Why are you chasing me?!

 [VERONICA, spoken]
You’re just unconscious, right? Ram? Ram!

 [KURT, spoken]
I was just kidding about your girlfriend being a whore!

 [J.D., spoken]
Get off the fence! Get off the damn fence!
Annotation:
During this section, a part of music in the background that is heard is “Yo Girl”.

Lyric: Ich Luge
Annotation:
Actually means “I lie” in english. If only Veronica took German, she’d have avoided this!

Lyric: Ich Luge
Annotation:
Actually means “I lie” (in perfect tense) in English. If only Veronica took German, she’d have avoided this! PROPOSED SUGGESTION: Meaning, “I’m lying” in German.
